If you've never experienced hypnotherapy session before, you probably have questions. Maybe you're curious about how hypnosis works... or wondering if it's anything like what you've seen in movies or on stage.
Let me put your mind at ease: Real hypnotherapy is nothing like what you've seen in entertainment.
There's no swinging pocket watch. No spiral to stare at. You won't cluck like a chicken. You won't be unconscious or "under someone's control." In fact, you'll be aware the entire time.
So, what does happen during a hypnosis session? Let me walk you through it, step by step.
Before the Session: We Talk
Every session starts with a conversation. This isn't a formality—it's essential.
I want to understand:
What motivated you to contact me
What you've tried before
What success looks like for you
Any concerns or questions you have
This is also your chance to ask me anything. Many people want to know: "Will this actually work for me?" or "What if I can't be hypnotized?"
Here's the truth: If you want to be hypnotized, you can be. Hypnosis is a natural state you enter multiple times a day—when you're absorbed in a good book, driving on autopilot, or that moment right before you fall asleep. I'm just guiding you into that state intentionally.
Getting Comfortable

Whether we're doing an in-person or virtual hypnosis session, once we've talked through your goals, and we’re ready to start, you'll get comfortable. Some people will grab a blanket, put in their earphones, and recline on their bed, couch, or favorite chair. Others prefer to sit upright, and that's fine too. There's no "right" way to do this. The important thing is that you are feeling comfortable.
Then we’ll begin!
The Induction: Entering Hypnosis
This is where I guide you into a relaxed, focused state. It usually takes just a few minutes.
I might ask you to:
Focus on your breathing
Notice sensations in your body
Imagine a peaceful place
Progressively relax different muscle groups
What hypnosis feels like:
Most people describe it as deeply relaxing—like that floaty feeling right before sleep, but you're still aware of what's happening. You might feel:
Heavy or light (both are normal)
Deeply calm and peaceful
Focused, but relaxed
Time passing differently (sessions often feel shorter than they are)
What it doesn't feel like:
Unconscious or "knocked out"
Out of control
Unable to hear me or respond
Like you're being forced to do anything
You're in control the entire time. If I said something you didn't agree with, you'd simply reject it. If there was an emergency, you could open your eyes immediately. You're always in charge.
The Work: Addressing Your Goals
Once you're in hypnosis, this is where the real work happens.
Your subconscious mind, the part that controls 95% of our thoughts, habits, emotions, and actions, is more open and receptive in this state. I'll use this time to:

Strengthen positive feelings & behaviors you want to reinforce
Help you visualize success and how it feels (Ex: Imagining yourself feeling calm and safe as you leave your house or board a plane)
Offer suggestions aligned with your goals
Reframe old patterns that no longer serve you
For example, if you're working on anxiety about leaving the house, I might guide you through imagining yourself stepping outside feeling confident, safe, and proud. Your subconscious mind absorbs this as a new pattern, making it easier to do it in real life.
During a Past Life Regression, we explore memories or experiences from other lifetimes that have relevance or lesson that will help you in your daily life now.
What You Might Experience
Everyone's experience is a little different, but here's what clients often report:
Vivid imagery - Feeling, seeing or sensing the emotions and details as if your goals are already achieved
Insights or realizations - "Oh, THAT'S why I do that!"
Emotional releases - Sometimes people cry, but smiling or even laughter is also frequent and encouraged!
A sense of peace - Feeling calm in a way they haven't in a long time
Some people remember every word I say. Others drift and only catch pieces. Both are completely normal and equally effective.
Coming Back: Emerging
At the end of the session, I'll gently guide you back to the present moment.
I may count from 1 to 5, or choose another grounding technique, to ensure you are feeling refreshed and excited about the clarity and possibilities gained during the session.
Most people feel better than when they came in—lighter, calmer, more hopeful.
After the Session: What Happens Next
After we finish, there is an opportunity to talk about what you experienced, but you don’t have to. Some people want to share what came up; others prefer to process privately. Both are fine.
I may give you suggestions for what to notice in the coming days and weeks. The changes from hypnosis aren't always immediate and dramatic (though sometimes they are!). More often, you'll notice subtle shifts:
That anxiety you used to feel? It's just... quieter and less frequent.
That habit you were trying to break? The urges lose strength and you may forget to do it.
That situation that used to trigger you? Doesn't bother you as much anymore.
The work continues after you leave. Your subconscious mind keeps integrating the suggestions, making them more and more natural over time.
How Many Hypnosis Sessions Will You Need?
Honestly, this is one of the hardest questions to answer because everyone's journey is so different. I've seen people make meaningful progress in just 1 session, and many others in 3-5 sessions. Occasionally, clients choose to continue working together for months because once their initial motivation for seeing me is resolved, they want to tackle additional goals or explore other areas of their life.
What matters most is that you're experiencing the shifts you're looking for. We'll create a plan together based on your specific goals.

Common Questions about Hypnosis
What if I can't be hypnotized?
If you can focus, relax, and follow instructions, you can be hypnotized. Some people go deeper than others, but depth doesn't determine effectiveness.
Will I say or do something embarrassing?
No. You're in control the entire time. You won't reveal secrets or do anything that goes against your values.
Can I get stuck in hypnosis?
Absolutely not. You can open your eyes and end the session anytime you choose. Hypnosis is a natural state you enter and exit easily.
Does hypnosis really work?
Hypnosis has been studied extensively for many issues such as anxiety, releasing habits, pain management, phobias, weight loss and reducing stress and it is recognized as effective. The best evidence, though, is my clients who come back and tell me the positive ways in which their lives have changed!
The Bottom Line
A hypnosis session is a collaborative, peaceful, empowering experience.
You're not giving up control—you're gaining it. You're not being "fixed" by someone else—you're accessing your own inner resources to create change.
I like to think of myself as a guide. I guide you to a state of focused awareness allowing you tap into your subconscious mind that is always working behind the scenes. That is where your most powerful resources live and where real, lasting change becomes possible.
But that power? It's all yours.
